Christmas in Antarctica
The Holiday Season is different in Antarctica, for obvious reasons. I miss all the important people in my life, I miss the family traditions, I miss the tastes and smells, and the warmth of the fireplace. But what really makes it different for me is something a little less obvious.
It’s the darkness, or lack there of.
I’m realizing now, during my 2nd Holiday Season in Antarctica, that the one thing that ties the whole thing together for me is darkness. It’s the lonely street light being strangled by darkness, surrounded by a blanket of snow. It’s staring out a dark window with the warmth of the fireplace on my back. It’s the black, silent nights.
I guess I can thank the never-setting sun for making it easier.
