Hello! My name is Eli Duke and right now I'm hanging out in Portland, OR.

My Super Secret Mission

First off, I have to admit that this “Super Secret Mission” of mine was only a secret from YOU (the reader of this blog). All of my peeps around town knew about it from the get go, but it was super, that much is true. I could have spilled the beans about it right away, but it was fun to keep y’all on the edge of your seat for a bit, wasn’t it?

Anyhoo, at the end of last week I was pulled out of the Plumber Shop to help the painters for a bit. They had been tasked to clean out and paint the inside of the fire suppression tank, which holds the water that sprays out of the sprinklers in the event of a fire, inside the main science building.

There I am, brandishing all my Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): from the respirator and goggles to the safety rope and Tyvek suit (among a few other things). It was a lot of fun, and I felt very safe: we had a safety officer on site at all times, harnesses with lifelines attached in the event that we passed out and needed to be pulled out of the tank, a huge hepa-vac sucking out all the dust and circulating fresh air, and air quality sensors all over the place.

We were inside the tank for about 3 days, grinding off all the rust and gunk, and then another 3 days painting it. I’m going back to the Plumber Shop tomorrow.

I hate that THAT was the super secret mission. I thought it was actually going to be a secret…or at least super. Fart.

I've been waiting all summer for this, and it just had to show up 3 days before I leave. Thanks a lot, Portland.
