Pink
I’m not quite sure why, but when I first launched ListYourList over 2 years ago, pink was my color of choice (and still is). I have no memory of how I decided on pink, but I don’t remember it ever being any other color, even in the early design stages.
Two years later the pink inklings have only increased. I’ve now become so attached that I think it’s fair to say it surpasses my previous favorite color: Teal (or was it gray?). It’s now the only color on this blog and my twitter page, and I even own 2 pink shirts: a Wii shirt I bought when I worked at Nintendo and a Pentwater shirt I bought in Michigan. When I was packing for Antarctica I thought to myself, “One pink shirt is probably enough,” and I brought the Wii one.
Before I knew it, I was waking up in my tiny little room at MMI, getting ready for my first day as a plumber in Antarctica. I put on my long johns and grabbed the first shirt on the pile, the Wii one. I ate some fried potatoes & salsa for breakfast and then walked into the grungy old Plumbing Shop that would eventually become my home away from home. I didn’t give a second thought to my pink shirt, but the plumbers sure did.
With in a few hours I had a nickname: Pinky. Within a few weeks it had spread to all corners of the station, especially with Walter constantly shouting, “Come on, Pinky. Let’s go.” I’m pretty sure that some people don’t even know my real name. Last night I forgot my laundry in the dryer, and then this morning Nick the GA (who also lives in MMI) was like, “I had to move some clothes out of the dryer, and when I saw that pink shirt and I knew they had to be yours.” Who knew that a t-shirt would define my season?
How can a color could be so provocative? I know that pink isn’t typically a male color, but am I really smashing down boundaries or something? Am I really pushing the envelope that much? Obviously for some people it’s no big deal, but this might be the first time that some of these people have ever seen a straight man in pink. It’s rocking their world.
I can make a difference.
