moment in the sun

for those of you that don’t know, one of the major blogs i read is that of the much acclaimed 37 Signals. they do internet stuff [they have created lots of cool online software (Basecamp, Highrise, and Campfire among others), a revolutionary new programming framework for Ruby that has literally affected the entire web and still has a long way to go (Ruby on Rails), and have really great ideas about "entrepreneurship, design, experience, simplicity, constraints, pop culture..." and do a great job blogging about it]. according to feedburner, they have about 62,000 RSS subscribers. it’s safe to say that they are a pretty big deal.
sometimes i see things around in my daily life that i think these guys would appreciate. maybe it’s a funny street sign, an interesting thing about a certain website, or maybe just a weird graphical/design choice on a napkin that i picked up at a restaurant. i notice these little details, and it’s nice to know that there are people out there who appreciate them as much as i do.
well, a few weeks ago i sent them an email of just that nature. it was about a picture that i took on our trip to Vancouver BC a few weeks ago. then, i checked their blog this evening a found none other than that very email front and center on their homepage! at least for now.
i almost didn’t believe it at first. i tried to show it to the girls and brandon, but overall i could tell that it didn’t matter to them (not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just the truth). it was then that i wished so very deeply for shane or bookis to be right next to me, or maybe to be at the SXSW Interactive festival at that very moment. i would have been a king among men.
oh yeah, and on a side note, you should totally try and see both of these movies: 1) The Ten, and 2) Diggers. they both look like really cool/crazy new movies from the creators of the state. i think this might be the big break that those guys/girl have been looking for all these years.
i did see it. i subscribe to the same feed. the moment i saw the picture, i knew it was yours. the i read the text and sure enough. i thought, “that’s my homeboy, eli. look at him.”
good job, dude.
Well said! I like the your comment on SVN, it’s blunt.
Shane and I posted independently of each other three minutes apart. wierd!
wired.
and weird.
thanks boys!
rockin’. congrats, E.
Eli, I do think that is pretty cool, but I read the comments associated with your photo, and I felt like the people totally missed the point of what you were saying. It was the “k” in think and the “m” in metric being put together in different colors that was clever. I thought that was fairly obviously what you were bringing to everyone’s attention, and I even thought you were right on in your description of what you enjoyed about it. But then everyone talked about how confusing the sign was, and their reasons didn’t have anything to do with the clever thing you were bringing up. I think they were all looking at it as a sign that gives information, while I think you were trying to get them to appreciate it more as a logo. I think you were totally right and the confusion displayed by everyone else makes me question the validity of the entire site. I was pretty intrigued by the sound of the blog from your description here, but the people seem like wieners. I guess those are just the readers, but then I have to ask myself if I wanted to be counted among them.
i completely agree with you drew. i was flabbergasted at the comments i was getting. in my comment i left i wanted to mention something about all the moronic things that people were saying, but i decided against it. but i would say that it was some unusual commenting, and seemed strange even to me. it’s still a great blog and i still think you’d like it.
[...] believe what was happening. some of you may remember the first time i was featured on SVN and my post about that, but this time it was a much bigger deal. i wrote back, he sent me the questions, and i wrote back [...]
