a new hope
by Eli
after totally freaking myself out over all this hard drive nonsense, i think that i’ve finally regained my grasp on things. some things have made a turn for the better, some for the worse, but for the most part things are right back where they used to be.
essentially, i was able to completely recover all of the data from my laptop hard drive. that drive was failing after being on for about 15 minutes, so i turned it on for 15 minutes at a time and pulled off what i could. when it started making it’s all too familiar grinding noise (that i started to actually get used to), i would turn it off and let it sit for about 6 hours and then do it all over again. after about 5 or 6 times, i had recovered everything.
and then the other night, something pretty strange happened. hannah went to Zoka (where i am right now) to do some interneting and borrowed my computer, completely forgetting it’s current state. about half way to the coffee shop she remembered what was up, but continued on anyway. it turns out that the 15 minutes of freedom i was getting out of the drive was directly proportional to the 6 hours i was leaving it off. before hannah took my computer to Zoka it had been off for about 3 days, and she said that she got at least a good 2 hours out of it. weird.
as far as my external drive goes, things are still looking pretty bleak. as of last week the drive was still not mounting on the desktop and instead making an unsettling clicking noise. i don’t know what else i can do in that regard, but in the end i don’t have any thing totally critical on that drive.
so here i am at the coffee shop working on my computer with it’s brand new 60GB / 7200RPM hard drive installed, and i’m just now starting to get back on my “feet” insofar as the internet goes. hopefully i’ll be posting a bit more frequently here and on flickr in the near future.
it’s good to be back.
and it’s good to have you back. have you consulted the a-holes that made the external to see if they have any clue why it’s being so broken?
well, i sorta “made” the external myself. i bought an internal drive on ebay and bought an enclosure and put it together. so, i don’t really have anyone to talk to about it. i’m just biding my time.
I’d run it by an apple store….those guys are handy….
I’d blame the a-hole who made the external drive.
unfortunately, brandon, i can’t do that. i bought it on ebay and so there probably isn’t a warranty anymore. plus, ALL hard drives fail eventually. it may have just been it’s time, ya know!
Uhhh…Eli.
i’m not quite sure what that means… are you saying that i’m not blogging enough? you must understand, i didn’t have a computer for about 2 weeks when my hard drives crashed. i’m still getting warmed up again. but don’t worry, i’ll be getting back on track in no time.
No….it’s ’cause Brandon’s hilarious comment about the a-hole who made the harddrive was lost on you….YOU were the a-hole who made the hard drive (as stated in an earlier post). Let me show you:
“well, i sorta “made” the external myself.” – Eli
“I’d blame the a-hole who made the external drive.” – Brandon
So now, not only are you an a-hole, but you’re also a little slow, apparently.
