iheartmymom.com

i’m still trying to change the way that i use my time on the internet. i know it doesn’t seem like that now, but that’s because there’s quite a bit of work to do during the transition. one of the things i’m doing is getting rid of my server, and one of the things that entails is getting rid of the websites on my server. aside from the obvious sites (the blogs i host and ListYourList), there are a few that don’t seem as obvious: iheartmymom.com, wellfedworld.com, and dukerentals.com. as per the title of this post, i will be focusing on iheartmymom, but this applies to them all in general.
most of my readers should remember iheartmymom.com, despite it’s lack of interactivity (except for my mom, i guess). it was a really sweet idea for an xmas present, it was an awesome exercise in php/mysql programming, but i never put in the time to take it past that: i never set it up for other users to create anything about their moms and why they heart them. if you actually go to iheartmymom.com right now, you’ll notice that even the original site has been taken down and replaced with a splash screen.
that said, i just got an email from nameboy reminding me that i need to renew it by the end of this month. i clicked on the link to renew it, and then i thought about it for a second, “do i really want/need to renew this domain?” i mean, the site hasn’t been up for at least 6 months or so, i don’t really have any plans to take the site any further, and i’m trying to reduce that type of internet activity. but then i think, “it was an xmas present for my mom, so does that mean i have to keep it up forever? i mean, i can’t just take back physical presents i give out.” then i think of how cool of an idea for a site it is and it makes me hold back. i really can’t decide.
so, in the interum, i’m asking my reader(s). what should i do? keep in mind that i’m getting rid of my server and will no longer be able to host the site as it was before. i could keep the domain itself and set it up sorta the same as a wordpress blog, i could try and give it to someone who might do something cool with it, or i could try and sell it on craigslist (i might get $10 for it).
what should i do?
i can see the difficulty in the whole situation. but in my mind, you should let the site go. i’m almost certain that your mom appreciated the present when it was given – most likely because of the sentiment that it expressed rather than the actual content. now i don’t know you mom that well, but she doesn’t strike me as an online type of gal. if she was constantly checking and using the website then i would tell you to keep it up because she was appreciating the functionality of it on top of the sentiment. therefore, if your interested in that particular setup has lapsed and she doesn’t use the site/need it to know that you heart her, then move on. i think that the idea is a good one, but much like the exile programs on matrix reloaded, it has served its purpose and can comfortably be deleted.
thanks pete. i’ll take your words to heart.
I’d say sell the idea to someone else and let them do the work. $10 will buy a lot of brown rice, sucka.
I mean baby, youve gotten rid of physical gifts ive gotten you. So i say go for it. MUUUAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA…..
