Hello! My name is Eli Duke and right now I'm hanging out in Portland, OR.

scat competition

in an interesting series of events, i ended up at Will Shipley‘s birthday party tonight. see, Will is morgan’s cousin; morgan is one of my housemates. last night she invited us to go to her cousin’s birthday party tonight and said there’d be free food and booze. we were totally there. it was pretty hilarious to realize who “cousin will” actually was when we walked through the door. i said, “morgan, is his last name ‘shipley’?” she said yes, and i smiled. i was introduced to him and said, “i was under the impression that i was going to ‘cousin will’s’ birthday party tonight, but i had no idea that ‘will’ was THE Will Shipley of Delicious Monster. (he smiled) it’s an honor to meet you.” and you know what he said? “i’m just a guy.” ha!

i hate sounding like such a fan boy, but it was cool to be there. i’ll be honest.

the party was at this new sushi place (Shun) on Blakeley just off of 25th Ave right down the street from Zoka. it was a totally hip party with saki, sushi, and origami. the saki was for drinking; the sushi was for eating; the origami was for competing: the 6 best creations won different variations of the iPod. killer party, dude!

one of the COOLEST parts of the party, though, was the jazz band that was playing. they were wonderful musicians and really kept the mood of the party going. they played some favorites (girl from ipanema) among others, but the coolest by far was “scat competition” (and no, not THAT kind of scat).

essentially, they played a song and then passed around the mic and let people scat away to their hearts content, always coming back to the chorus: “Scat Competition, YEAH YEAH! Scat Competition, YEAH YEAH!” it was absolutely hilarious, and at one point hannah and i joined in and did some sibling scatting (no, not THAT kind of scatting). it was great!

thanks for inviting me, morgan (and if you ever read this, i hope you aren’t all freaked out about this post all about how i met your cousin tonight; i think i might think this is weird if i were in your shoes).
