Blog . Eli Duke . Com

Hello! My name is Eli Duke and right now I'm hanging out in Portland, OR.

what i’ve been up to lately

i’d say the most obvious thing (at least from my perspective) has been the redesign of brandon’s website, troytotheworld.com. i started building the original site for him about 2 years ago and i created it all by hand in php. it was one of my first real solo projects (aside from andy’s site, which is up next for redesign), and i learned a shit load. at the time, i’d heard about prebuilt blogging software, but none of it seem good enough and flexible enough to do some of the things that i wanted to: like creating a massive database of 600 dvds. so, despite the warnings of my friends, i went ahead and did it all on my own. that worked out great for a while.

fast forward 2 years and i’m not much of a php programmer anymore. i’ve move on to better things (ruby on rails), and when i look back at the code of brandon’s old site it makes me want to puke. seriously. we talked about doing some updates to the site many times, but each time it would stop on my end because i just couldn’t work with that code anymore.

the solution was a complete migration to WordPress. it was kind of a pain in the ass and took me the better part of 2 days to get it all done, but in the end it was SO much better than trying to fix what was already there. and the great part about it is that wordpress just keeps getting better: updates are made regularly and new features are added. now brandon’s site will fit into that perfectly, forever!

in other news, i’ve applied for 2 jobs: 1) working at the bikeshop down the street repairing, building, and selling bikes 2) working with brandon at Nintendo of America as a game tester. i’d say that i’m most excited about working with brandon at Nintendo: we’d get to carpool to work everday (which means we’d be sharing gas AND riding in the carpool lane), i’d be making more money than i am now and be able save a SHIT LOAD, and i’d get to work at Nintendo as a game tester. how cool is that? both jobs seem promising as far as the feedback that i’ve received, but nothing solid has formed yet. i’ll keep you posted.

also, i’m trying to learn spanish again. a new friend of mine in town, alex, already speaks it pretty damn well, but he wants to speak it better. i want to do that too, so we (and a few of the other roommates) are going to form a speaking group. we’ll do flash cards and watch spanish movies, but most importantly we’ll be attending a speaking group at a restaurant right down the street. every night of the week they have a different language, and thursday is spanish night. alex and i will be going for the first time tonight. i’m pumped.

we are still continuing our wednesday night tradition at the cousin’s house. back when LOST was on we’d be over eating dinner and watching that. but LOST is no more. we still wanted to keep that tradition alive, so we’ve decided to watch other programs. our first one was the 4 part mini series Longitude. next on the list is Band of Brothers and that’s a long one. hopefully it will take us right on up to the 3rd season of LOST.

oh yeah, and i did i mention that we still have a shit load of juice.

yeah, i’m psyched. i’ve sorta been in contact with them a little here and there, but nothing solid yet. i’m going to be calling them tomorrow and i’m really hoping to actually get something solid out of them.

I've been waiting all summer for this, and it just had to show up 3 days before I leave. Thanks a lot, Portland.
